Dorm Room Setup

One outlet, one wall you are not allowed to touch, and a distance measured in feet rather than yards. A dorm room is the constraint set that makes almost everything else optional, which is why it is the easiest room on this site to plan.

Three measurements

  • Desk or bed to the screen position

    Why it decides

    The distance is short enough that panel size becomes a problem rather than an upgrade, and the figure decides which sizes are sensible.

    How to take it

    Measure from where your head actually is at the desk and from where it is on the bed, and use the shorter of the two.

    What it rules out

    Panel sizes that would fill more of your view at that distance than you can comfortably watch.

  • The one outlet

    Why it decides

    It is the hard limit on the whole room, and everything else is arranged around what it can serve.

    How to take it

    Find it, note what is already in it, and measure from it to the surface the screen will stand on.

    What it rules out

    Any arrangement that would need a second strip, an extension cord, or a cord run across the floor to a doorway.

  • Depth of the surface

    Why it decides

    Nothing is going on the wall, so a desk or a shelf carries the panel and its stand, and depth is what keeps it there.

    How to take it

    Measure the surface front to back, then the footprint of the panel stand from its documentation.

    What it rules out

    Any panel whose stand overhangs the surface, at any amount, in any direction.

Room constraints

  • Mounting is usually not permitted, and that ends the discussion rather than starting one.
  • There is one outlet and it is shared with everything else you own.
  • The viewing distance is short, so a larger panel makes the room worse rather than better.
  • Everything leaves the room at the end of the year, so nothing permanent is worth planning.
  • A roommate shares the sound, which changes what the sound has to be.

Order of work

  1. Measure the distance firstFrom the desk and from the bed. In a room this size, the distance decides the panel rather than the other way round.
  2. Audit the outletList what is already plugged in and what has to be. The count decides which strip, and whether the plan fits at all.
  3. Check the surface and the standDepth of the desk or shelf against the footprint of the panel stand, with the anti-tip hardware from its documentation fitted.
  4. Plan sound for one room and two peopleA compact speaker or a small bar is enough here. Try what you own at the volume you would actually use first.

One outlet is a counting problem, not an invitation to chain strips. Never plug a power strip into another strip or into an extension cord, and never plug a heating appliance of any kind into either. A panel standing on a desk or a shelf can be pulled over, and in a shared room with visitors, children or animals in it that is the likeliest thing to happen to it: fit the anti-tip hardware that came with the panel and follow its documentation. Do not run a cord under a rug or across a doorway.
